MigrationKit

MigrationKit is a lightweight Mac setup and migration toolkit template for capturing apps, settings, Dock layout, and file assets, then restoring them on a new Mac.

Homebrew is required for the install steps, and capture-mac.sh or setup-mac.sh will install it if it is missing.

Before You Run Anything

  1. Give Terminal Full Disk Access.
  2. Make the shell scripts executable from the MigrationKit folder:
find . -type f -name "*.sh" -exec chmod +x {} +

What It Does

  • Captures Dock layout
  • Captures installed Mac App Store apps
  • Captures Final Cut Pro presets, workspace, and the Mine title folder
  • Installs Homebrew apps and App Store apps on the new Mac
  • Restores Final Cut Pro assets
  • Applies a curated set of system settings

Included Scripts

  • capture-mac.sh
  • setup-mac.sh
  • scripts/capture-dock.sh
  • scripts/capture-app-store-apps.sh
  • scripts/capture-fcp.sh
  • scripts/install-bootstrap-tools.sh
  • scripts/install-brew-apps.sh
  • scripts/install-app-store-apps.sh
  • scripts/install-fcp.sh
  • scripts/install-system-settings.sh

Capture On The Source Mac

Run this on the Mac you want to copy from:

./capture-mac.sh

This saves:

  • assets/captured/dock-layout.txt
  • assets/captured/app-store-apps.txt
  • assets/captured/fcp presets

Set Up A New Mac

Copy this folder to the new Mac, then run:

./setup-mac.sh

If you want to prep the machine step by step, run scripts/install-bootstrap-tools.sh first.

Notes

  • scripts/install-bootstrap-tools.sh installs Homebrew when needed, then installs mas and dockutil.
  • scripts/install-brew-apps.sh installs the Homebrew formulae and casks used by this setup.
  • scripts/install-app-store-apps.sh installs the apps listed in assets/captured/app-store-apps.txt.
  • scripts/install-fcp.sh restores Final Cut Pro presets, the saved workspace, and the captured Mine title folder.
  • scripts/capture-dock.sh needs dockutil installed.
  • scripts/capture-app-store-apps.sh needs mas installed.
  • scripts/capture-fcp.sh expects the FCP assets to exist on the source Mac.
  • scripts/install-system-settings.sh applies a small set of defaults write settings and restores the saved Dock layout.
  • Some settings may need a logout or restart to take effect.
  • Failure messages are short and basic on purpose.
